The TLF can handle up to 600 watts of incandescent lighting.   It is a single channel, volume sensitive,  light organ that is wired to the speaker connections of a single speaker (like PA systems) or connected to the Right channel of a stereo sound system.

The accompanying CD has two 30 minute sound tracks: Track 1 contains thunder sounds in stereo, with the right channel, time displaced,  about two seconds ahead of the left.    Track 2 on this CD  is for creating random candle flame flicker.

These two features keep problems to a minimum:
1) A sound level indicator visually warns of excess sound power into the TLF.
2) An external fuse holder so customer can replace the 'sound power' fuse.

THUNDER/LIGHTNING EFFECT:
The TLF does require a wired connection be made to one pair of (8 ohm) speaker terminals, usually these terminals are at the back of the amplifier (ref. INSTRUCTIONS link above).   Unlike former versions, this latest version of the TLF (yellow label) is wired to the speaker terminals LEAVING the speaker wires ALSO connected.  Thus thunder sound can be heard and seen (via the TLF) with only one speaker available.   So with this latest version TLF,  single speaker PA systems can be used.

A feature of the TLF is that its solid state switch gives FULL brightness to the light bulbs, at maximum thunder levels. Because of this, regular bulbs work fine; however, the absolute best lightning effect is created by using photoflood bulbs. These are special purpose light bulbs that may be purchased (only) at a photography store. A photoflood (sometimes called photocopy) bulb screws into a standard light socket but is very much brighter.  A 200 watt photoflood bulb may cost as much as $ 6.00 but the effect is well worth it.

CANDLE FLICKER EFFECT:

The sound components and connections shown in this photo are for the Candle Flicker effect ONLY.   The thunder/lightning effect is produced with an amplified speaker arrangement as described (above) on this page.

Track # 2 on the CD contains random noise, and is recorded on the RIGHT channel (only) as it is not meant to be played through a speaker.   With random noise input, the TLF creates a light flicker that resembles the flickering of candles.   For this effect, a portable CD player can be used with the TLF connected to the RIGHT channel of the headphone jack.  Note:  with the TLF's capacity of 600 watts, many more bulbs than just the one shown in the photo could be used.
